Shooting at Seattle Jewish Federation

Barukh Dayan haEmet. I wasn't at Federation on Friday, thank G!d, but this is a close-knit Jewish community, and we're all feeling the tragedy acutely. Mobius provides a news brief and initial commentary, so I made my own short statement there. Here in duplicate is what I wrote:

My friend Ethan spent the first half of Shabbat trying to comfort a friend whose girlfriend works at Federation and who was missing until she turned up at the hospital with injuries from jumping out of a second-story window into a dumpster to escape the shooting. Then on his way home he walked past a big "No More War for Israel" banner and he wanted to cry.

Israelis aren't all in support of every Israeli state action any more than diaspora Jews are; and, you know, I would rather not be attacked for the U.S. government's military campaigns myself. So now perhaps we know how the Lebanese civilians feel who "we" have callously allowed Hizbollah to use as human camouflage and shields.

Yet, Seattle Federation did just host a big public rally "in support of Israel." I didn't attend, because I don't support the action in Lebanon and the rally's gist seemed fairly obvious and blunt. But I do support Israel, and I am perfectly pleased to take pride in Israel's constructive achievements even though they aren't "mine."

This guy Haq was obviously crazy. (Kind of like trying to deter suicidal radical militants by bombing a liberal Arab state's civilian infrastructure all the way back to Tehran.) I don't want crazy people to shoot me because of what my Jewish brothers do. Really, though, I just don't want crazy people to shoot me.

Well, I can tell you, that for the first time in years I've been afraid to wear my tzitzit in public (but am doing so anyway)(and I find myself in some not so friendlly towards jews places, but this environment that has been created is beyond the beyond). I find it unconscionable that there has been so little press about this terrorist act in Seattle, or about civilian casualities in Israel. May HaShem preserve all our family and friends in the Land, and give us strength and support here in the Diaspora.

  • I am removing all anonymous comments that are being used to advertise other news and commentary outlets' coverage from my blog. One anonymous commenter, whose commercial links I have removed did say this:

As a former Seattle citizen, I want to apologize to the whole world for what Seattle has become.

To which I would respond: What? What has Seattle become? As a current Seattle resident, I can assure you that the entire local community -- including the local Islamic establishment -- is stunned and outraged at the violence last Friday.

Another anonymous commenter wrote that "Sound Politics is really doing very good coverage of this issue."

To which I respond: Don't waste your time on ideological "analysis" that can't even be bothered to stick to factual information. "Sound Politics" is referring to the shooter as a Pakistani terrorist. In Western Washington of all places -- where we are still rightfully ashamed of the internment of Japanese-descended Americans in WWII -- this kind of BS should not be tolerated. Haq is an American from the Tri Cities. I'm sorry, kids, he's a home-grown lunatic: Gary Ridgway, not Mohammed Atta.

Ted Bundy was psychopathically misogynist, so he murdered women. Barukh Goldstein was psychopathically anti-Muslim, so he murdered Muslims. Naveed Haq is a psychopathic antisemite, so he shot up a room of Jews. I'm sorry to say that what Seattle has become is a place like just about anywhere else in the world, where there is enough bigotry of every flavor to destroy us all. So let's not all jump on that bandwagon now, okay?

Forcing a complex issue black and white will only mess things up worse. Now play fair or get the hell off my blog.
